How to make filigree jewelry from paper bags

This guide will show you how to make filigree jewelry from paper bags with paper quilling. If you coat them with lacquer they look like they are made from wood.

Difficulty level: Beginners

Instructions:

Materials:
Paper bag
Ruler
Utility knife
Graph paper
White glue
2 toothpicks
Small Bottle cap
Earring wire

Open the paper bag and remove the handles

Fold the bag enough times to be able to place it on the graph paper and see a few lines on the top and the bottom of it

Use your ruler as a guide to cut strips the width of 1 square on graph paper

The example earring used 10 strips but you can cut more to experiment with.

Cut off one pointed end of a toothpick

Very carefully cut a slit in the cut end as shown
in the picture

Put a strip into the slit of the toothpick

Roll it up tightly and neatly - not too tightly that you won’t be able to remove it

To make looser shapes:

Carefully remove the rolled up paper strip and put it into the bottle cap

Use the second toothpick to apply a tiny bit of glue to the end only

Let the glue dry

Squeeze one end to make a tear drop shape

Squeeze both ends to make a leaf shape

To make a tight roll:
Apply glue to the end before removing the rolled up strip from the toothpick

Hold it in place with your fingers for a minute and them remove it

To make the small rings used to insert in the earring post:
Cut 2 very thin strips

Cut both strips 2 and 1/2 inches long

Roll them tightly on the toothpick and glue the ends.

*These small rolls can also be used as beads

Experiment with different combinations or use the example design

When you are satisfied with the arrangement glue the pieces together with a generous amount of glue.

Glue the little beads on top for an easy way to thread your creations on the earring wire or the string used for necklaces or bracelets

To make the earring:
Open the closed loop on the earring wire with plyers or a scissor
Insert the small bead that is on the top of the earring you just made
Squeeze the loop closed again

Enjoy your new earrings!
