Materials:
1 toilet paper roll
Barbeque sticks, toothpicks or ice cream popsicle sticks
Ruler
Scissors
Tape
Rubberband
White glue
Thread or wool

Slit the toilet paper roll lengthwise

Make marks on the roll ½ from the edge all the way around

Use the marks as a guide to cut the roll in half

Roll the edges around and tape or glue them in place.
For thick wool and children make a wider tube.

Cut 4 sticks ½ - ¾ inch longer than the length of the tube.

4 works well but you can experiment with more sticks

Glue the 4 sticks to the tube
You can hold them in place with tape
or glue one at a time and let each dry before gluing the next stick

Apply a generous amount of glue inside the curve of the other half of the tube that you cut

Wrap it around the tube with the sticks and hold it in place with a rubber band until it dries completely.
Remove the rubber band

Now you can start knitting

Insert the string or wool through the side with the sticks

Bring the string or wool behind a stick and across to the opposite side

Bring the string or wool behind the stick and over to the left stick

Bring the string or wool behind and across

Bring the string to the stick on next to it.

Bring the string around the back of the stick. It will be on top of the loop that was there already
Now the string is set up to begin knitting

Pull the bottom string up over the top string and the stick.

You can do this with your fingers, a crochet needle or a toothpick

Now pull the string sticking out of the bottom of the tube. It will tighten the stitch

Bring the string to the stick on the left. It should be on top on the loop already there.

Pull the bottom loop up and over the stick and then pull the string from the bottom of the tube.

That’s it.

Move to the next stick on the left and repeat the process of over and pull from the bottom again.

Each time move to the left stick and repeat the process.

Your knitting will begin to show through the bottom of the tube.

When you have reached the length you want, cut the string or wool at least 3 inches from the last stitch.

When you make the next stitch pull the bottom loop over as usual but then pull out the loop remaining on the stick until the cut end is pulled out.

Repeat in order for the other 3 sticks

Result

Make the ropes as long as you need and have fun experimenting with different thicknesses of wool!
