How to make Reversi or Othello with an old CD case

Games made from old CD cases don’t take up much space are great to take on trips.
This guide will show you how to use a CD case to make the strategy game called Othello. It is also known as Reversi. Enjoy!

Difficulty level: Beginners

Instructions:

Materials:
Old CD case
Colored paper
Thick scrap cardboard
Scissors
Glue stick
Pen or pencil

Open the CD case. Carefully remove the paper and the plastic that holds the CD.

Trace the outline of the square paper from the CD and cut out the square.

Check if the cut square fits nicely into the CD case.
This will be the background paper for the game.

Take the paper that you used to make the outline and fold it in half.

Align the folded paper to your background paper and use the edge to make a straight line.

Rotate the background.
Align the folded paper to one side and make a line along the edge.

Fold the CD paper in half again lengthwise.

Align it to the sides and use the edge to make a line
Rotate the paper and repeat.
This will give you 16 squares.

Cut thin strips of paper and glue them to the lines
You can cut off the extra or fold it over the edge and glue it to the back of the paper

Trace the outline of the cap from the glue stick 16 times on one color and 16 times of another color.
Cut out the circles

Glue a circle to the cardboard.
Cut the cardboard along the outline of the circle

Result

Flip the circle to the cardboard side and glue the second color circle to it.
Repeat steps 12 to 14 so that you will have 16 circles
*Each circle should have one color on one side and the second color on the other side.

That’s it! You can start playing your new game with a friend.
Begin by placing 2 circles of each color in the center, as shown in the picture.

Each player chooses a color.
To play the game you place your color in an empty square so that one or more of your opponent’s pieces is between your pieces.
In this picture the red is on the top and bottom of the blue.

This captures the blue and it is flipped over to the red side.

It is now the blue’s turn. Here is one possible way to capture red.
Do you see 2 other possibilities?

The red between the blues is flipped over to the blue side.

Each player in turn finds an empty square to make one or more of the other color between their color.
If you cannot find one then you lose your turn.
The winner has the most circles with their color.
