Be patient and try to catch the animal doing what he does naturally.
Do not try to force him to pose the way that you want.

Try to catch the animal in motion. Some animals love to run and romp. Try to use it.

Try to shoot the animal at eye level. This photo gives a more personal feeling of the picture.

If you have trouble photographing your pet moving around, try getting someone they feel comfortable with to hold them.

Take the whole picture into account.
Decide what details of the surroundings relay the information you want included in your picture.

If they take up only a very small portion of the photo then the background will get more attention.

Do not get very close unless you want a specific detail of the animal to be the main focus and not the whole animal.

If you have difficulty photographing pets in motion, you can wait for them to rest or fall asleep.
